Out and About: The Corner
/An important part of the work of the CHEX team is keeping in touch with our network and the valuable work being undertaken to tackle health inequalities in local communities across Scotland.
Over the summer, Sarah caught up with Steph, the Outreach Lead for the Corner in Dundee. One of our workshops leads at the CHEX Conference earlier in the year, the Corner are a health and wellbeing service for young people in Dundee. Part of the Health & Social Care partnership the Corner has a range of services provided by youth workers and clinical nursing staff.
Its aim is to enable young people to look after and improve their own health and wellbeing and undertakes a community development approach to tackling inequalities. The Corner has a drop-in service in Dundee City Centre which provides Health & Information Services for young people aged 11-19.
Partnership working is key to the Corner’s approach and key services young people can access include:
Mental health
Sexual health
Young Carers Health Checks
Strive Substance Support
The Corner work with young people in their communities as well as the City Centre drop in and the approach is informed by a commitment to reduce health inequalities, promote early intervention and prevention and deliver high quality, person centred safe care. Partnerships include:
Schools & Colleges
Local CLD Youth Work Teams
Carers Services
Drop In at a local GP Practice
Local Housing Associations
NHS CAMHS
Partnership is integral to the work of the Corner but this also means that the changes to funding and therefore the capacity within other services has an impact on their work in schools and communities. Mergers of schools and pressures on partner agencies , reductions in budget and workforce in other agencies and the pressures on other NHS services such as CAMHS, means that they face an increase in demand on their services, changes in the age profile of young people accessing their services affecting capacity to deliver groups and services in local areas.
Despite these challenges the Corner continues to provide valuable informal, inclusive and accessible advice, information and health and wellbeing services throughout Dundee.
