Out and About: Farmstrong Scotland
/Raising awareness among national networks and professional societies about CHEX, and how community-led health can help tackle health inequalities, is an important part of the job for the CHEX team.
One way we do that is to provide inputs and workshops at other national network organisation’s events and conferences.
Keeping up to date with what community led health organisations and practitioners are doing to improve people’s health and wellbeing is an important part of the job for the CHEX team.
Farmstrong Scotland is a new rural wellbeing programme for the farming and crofting sector. Following their participation at the CHEX Ideas Clinic Sarah met their community engagement specialist, Clare, to find out more about their work.
Clare shared Farmstrong’s story which started in New Zealand and was established in Scotland in 2023 and focuses on resilience and wellbeing in farming and crofting families.
Farmstrong Scotland are a small team working across the country using the Five Ways to Wellbeing to help farmers and crofters share, learn and support their wellbeing.
A big part of Clare’s role is to promote Farmstrong, engage with local groups and networks and to develop local, peer led groups across Scotland. There are already two local groups established in the Lothians and Borders with more groups planned.
Sarah heard from Clare about the many and varied practical, peer led activities which support health and wellbeing. These include farm visits, walk and talks, webinars, podcasts and sauna events!
What is so important about all of these activities is that they are peer led with Farmstrong acting as a catalyst and facilitator to enable farmers, crofters and their families to share things they can do to look after themselves and the other people in their business.
