Out and About: East Kilbride & Strathaven Community Learning and Development Local Action Planning Group
/Raising awareness among national networks and professional societies about CHEX, and how community-led health can help tackle health inequalities, is an important part of the job for the CHEX team.
One way we do that is to provide inputs and workshops at other national network organisation’s events and conferences.
CHEX was pleased to be asked along to present at the March 2025 East Kilbride & Strathaven Community Learning and Development Local Action Planning Group meeting in East Kilbride.
The group consists of a range of local partners who are involved in Community Learning and Development, including youth work, adult learning, family learning, education, health and wellbeing, employment and training.
Andrew from CHEX headed along to say a bit about CHEX and SCDC’s wider work. First, he had the chance to listen to two other inputs from Take Ctrl South Lanarkshire and Lanarkshire Rape Crisis Centre.
Louise Docherty and Florence Potter from Take Ctrl South Lanarkshire introduced the essential support they provide people using self-directed support services in the local area. They shared a couple of really useful and engaging videos showing how the service works. A video highlighting the positive impact a dedicated personal assistant has had on a young person’s was particularly striking, not to mention moving.
Andi Wessel from Lanarkshire Rape Crisis Centre gave a really thought provoking presentation on her preventative work in schools. From her engaging and insightful delivery, it was easy to understand how young people can really benefit from this kind of preventative work, particularly given the increasing pressures and online influences on young people – an issue which Andi very ably articulated.
All in all, it was great to get out the (home) office and meet some new people working directly with communities face to face.
