Prevention in action: Community-led approaches to improving health and reducing health inequalities

This one-day training will explore the vital role community-led health plays in Scotland’s drive to embed prevention at the heart of health and wellbeing policy.

After many decades of improvement, life expectancy in Scotland is going backwards. Some people and communities are facing unfair and avoidable differences in how long they live, and how long they live in good health.

This health inequalities crisis is one of the key reasons Scotland is shifting to a preventative model across our public services - addressing issues ‘upstream’ before they happen. The Population Health Framework, Public Service Reform agenda, and the Health and Social Care Renewal Framework all clearly make prevention both a priority - and a necessity - in how we deliver public services.

Community-led approaches to health are key to developing this policy agenda in a sustainable, and effective way that we know makes real positive change happen across our communities.

This training will explore:

Delivered by experienced community development practitioners and facilitators, this training will answer key questions:

  • What are the current strategic policy drivers around prevention and health and wellbeing?

  • What are the impacts of health inequalities on communities across Scotland - and what are the wider social determinant of health?

  • What do community-led approaches look like and how do they address inequalities?

  • How do these community development approaches support the prevention policy agenda?

  • How could your agency work alongside local communities to build health and wellbeing? What’s your role?

  • What practical resources and supports are available to deliver this way of working?
