CHEX and Scottish Community Development Centre

CHEX is part of the Scottish Community Development Centre (SCDC) and we receive funding from NHS Health Scotland. SCDC works to build strong, resilient and healthy communities.  CHEX is integral to this work in supporting community-led health organisations and their public sector partners to carry out community development approaches to achieve positive health outcomes.

CHEX and the SCDC Logic Model

The SCDC logic model provides pathways of activities towards change; outlining the development route from achieving short-term outcomes towards impacting on national outcomes. The focus of our work is with communities, practitioners and policy makers and following are examples of CHEX’s contributions to these pathways and outcomes. Activities  

  • Working with communities

 Promote and support participation in ‘Health Issues in the Community’ (HiiC) training initiative – a learning experience for community members to act individually and collectively on community health outcomes.

  • Working with practitioners

 Create opportunities for practitioners to exchange and build good practice in community development approaches to health improvement e.g. CHEX Practice Development Seminars 

  • Working with policy makers

Promote practice via round table discussions and events to development understanding and knowledge of the benefits and added value from community development approaches to health improvement e.g. CHEX’s contribution to Healthy Communities: Meeting the Shared Challenge’ Regional meetings

Short Term Outcomes

  • Working with communities

Community members who have participated in HiiC are better equipped to address health issues e.g. accessing healthy food with establishing a ‘Garden Share Scheme’.

  • Working with practitioners  

 Practitioners are better equipped to support community-led health projects and work in partnership with them to achieve change e.g. production of evidence through use of film highlighted in CHEX Seminar Report ‘A Picture of Health’

  • Working with policy makers

Heightened awareness of the benefits of community-led health approaches are taken forward into decision-making arenas highlighted in work with other partners in producing and implementing recommendations from the Community-led Health Task Group.

Medium Term Outcomes

  • Working with communities

District-wide community-led health networks have fed into national consultations on national consultations on health improvement and raised their own priorities with national decision-makers e.g. Mental Health Strategy for Scotland

  • Working with practitioners

Practitioners have had opportunities to develop dialogue with policy makers and commissioners on the benefits of working in partnership with community groups e.g. CHEX’s  ‘Knowing Me: Knowing You’ seminars

  • Working with policy makers

Policy makers have had opportunities to take forward evidence from community-led health approaches into national policies e.g. ‘Review of Scottish Health and Social Care Directorates

Long Term Outcomes

  • Working with communities

Communities have fed into national networks such as Scottish Communities for Health and Wellbeing and provided practical evidence on successful initiatives with view to influencing policy priorities

  • Practitioners

Service providers have been responsive to articulated needs from communities and have worked in partnership to take forward priorities to local decision-makers e.g. Scottish Border’s Health Improvement Localities Group

  • Policy Makers

In collaboration with partners – Community Food and Health Scotland and Voluntary Health Scotland achieved support from Scottish Government and NHS Health Scotland to (a) provide a ‘bridge’ to influence and articulate the perspective of the sector’s needs (b) facilitate processes to build the ‘bridge’ (c) provide channels of communication between policy makers and community and voluntary health organisations and (c) provide a ‘hub’ of advice, information and expertise
