Training & Resources

The training function of CHEX focuses on identifying and responding to the training needs of the community health sector. This includes: undertaking training needs analysis, mapping issues within the sector, designing and delivering training materials and programmes, and supporting Network projects in developing their own local training opportunities.  CHEX has responsibility for supporting the National 'Health Issues in the Community' (HIIC) training programme which is dealt with in detail in its own section of this website.  To visit, click here.

Workforce Training Needs

Over the course of 2006/2007 CHEX and Voluntary Health Scotland have undertaken a workforce enquiry into the main training needs/ issues in relation to health improvement for the community/ voluntary health sector.  There have been two main areas of work:

Firstly, we undertook a questionnaire survey of CHEX and VHS core networks (to download the report, click here.)

Secondly, we commissioned Marion Lacey from Rock Solid Social Research to undertake more detailed follow-up phone interviews with a cross-section of respondents ( to download the report, click here)

In addition the main findings and recommendations from both reports have been pulled together into a summary document (to download this report, click here

Materials

'Getting our Act Together' - local training handbook

CHEX, in collaboration with a range of agencies and Projects, has produced a local training handbook on Community Development and Health titled 'Getting our Act Together'.  The aim of this handbook is to be a resource to local community health practitioners for developing greater shared understanding of community development approaches in health at a local level.  It contains sections on organising a training programme, the possible content of such a programme - including a range of exercises/resources that can be used, and case study examples of various multi-agency training programmes that CHEX has been involved with.  In addition, CHEX can deliver local training for trainers sessions for workers who are interested in developing their own local multi-agency training programmes around community development approaches in health (contact david@scdc.org.uk if you're interested). The handbook is published by the Community Development Foundation and is available for £19.95 from CDF Publications Section - www.cdf.org.uk/

'Healthy Organisations' Annual Report

CHEX is represented on the Steering Group for Healthy Organisations which brings together a tailored package of GCVS (Glasgow Council for the Voluntary Sector) organisational support and development services to meet the needs of health-oriented organisations in the voluntary sector.  The emphasis of Healthy Organisations is on joined-up support based on a thorough, independent analysis of your organisational needs.

Several toolkits, resources and frameworks are available to help understand why community-led health is important – and how to start and sustain such work. The diagram here shows the key stages in the process, and which resources may be helpful in aiding thinking and planning.
