About the Projects

Healthy Living Centres in Scotland work to address health inequalities with communities on low income and in some cases disadvantaged areas.  Health inequalities occurs on many levels from ill health to material deprivation, unequal access to health care, unaffordable food - the list is long.  To address health inequalities HLCs take action at a community level, changing attitudes to health and influencing policy.  Many use community development approach to health which accepts that people hold experiences of their own health and that health inequalities can be tackled by listening to them, supporting them to express their needs and making their voice heard.  In particular the projects are characterised partnership working which draws together the skills and knowledge of the community and agencies.  They also have high levels of service user involvement which ensures that those in reciept of the services have the skills, confidence and opportunity to influence how the services are designed and delivered.  To find out about Health Living Centres in your local authority area click on the links below:
